Joining Strategies
All of our Bulls For Sale have been assessed for suitability for joinings ranging from F1 Angus, Brahman, Holstein and fullblood production to possible F2> situations in breeding scenarios where breeders have been selected from high Tajima F1 progeny. Five generation pedigrees on all bulls are available on request.
The Selection Table accompanying Bulls For Sale provides expert recommendations to help inform decision-making. A foundation of the table is a Japanese rotational breeding system detailed in a late 2006 edition of Australian Wagyu Update, in which Japanese master breeder Mr Shogo Takeda provided methodology for breeding ‘next generation’ Black Wagyu in Australian conditions. (Please see following article for more information).

The Selection Table Explained
1.) F1 Joinings – Angus, Holstein, Brahman
Note that Mr Takeda’s view on bulls suitable for F1 is that significantly lower Tajima content is required than the sire specification of some Australian feedlots. Individual feedlot specifications for sires must be carefully checked.
The progeny target in traditional southern Australian F1 Wagyu beef progams (over large frame score Angus) is high, consistent levels of marbling. Cow herd marbling contributions are sometimes unclear.
Bull selection tables address these scenarios. Bulls are identified as suitable for a variety of joinings ranging from Angus F1, F2>, to Holstein and Bos indicus.
2.) Wagyu F2> Crossbred Beef Cow Herds
In some Australian Wagyu cross herds, breeders are the progeny of high Tajima F1 programs rather than purpose-bred dams, where high Tajima sire selection for F2 and beyond has continued. In such situations, milk, growth and yield can decline to deliver a diminished outcome for long feed programs. It is suggested that in such herds with known marbling capabilities, Tajima sire contributions can be reduced with balanced milk/growth/marbling breeding combinations similar to modern Japanese trends (EG: Kedaka/Tajima), which will also take best advantage of heterosis. Comments on individual bulls reflect this approach.
3.) Full Blood Wagyu
Fullblood sires have been allocated to Mr Takeda’s A, B, C and D Groups on the basis of 16/16 pedigree analysis. The rotational system then provides a joining template designed to maximise and stabilise marbling heredity; build maternal, growth and yield traits across herds; and avoid inbreeding combinations that may trigger genetic disorders. The fullblood joining potential of all sale bulls is tabled.
